Reading ~~

Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life.~ Mortimer J. Adler ~

I am the happy recipient of a pair
of bandy dandy new glasses.
My old pair had broken, and were
not comfortable to wear for
any extended amount of time.
Now that I am fitted with
new, and I must say more stylish
glasses I can resume
one of my favorite past
times.......Reading.
I'm now leaving for a few hours of
enjoyment at the library.

Reading makes immigrants of us all.
It takes us away from home, but more important,
it finds homes for us everywhere.~
Hazel Rochman ~

Of all the diversions of life, there is
none so proper to fill up its
empty spaces as the reading of
useful and entertaining authors.~
Joseph Addison ~

The Box ~~

" Peas in a Pod "
The story of the box......I have an interesting old box sitting
on my kitchen counter that I just love. Most of my
friends don't "get it" they never have....and they never will.
They dont understand my love of old things, and made to look old things.
Its okay by me if they think I'm a little strange, to surround
myself with odd, old, and junkie things.....I have always
said each, and every one of us should feather our nest the
way we see fit, the way we like our homes to look, and what brings us joy.
We should do this to the best of our ability. Some times we are dictated by
our needs, some times by the love we have for our family,
( big cushy recliner for hubby)
and lots of times by our financial situation. But even with those considerations,
when its time to purchase an item, we can choose things that make
us happy and bring us joy.
Back to the Box ~~
This fabulous .... in my eyes old wooden
box, was given to me two years ago by dear friends when
they came to visit for a few days. One of them Anita with
her husband Gerry own a store in Emmaus, PA called aunt daisy's.
Its a beautiful store filled with period furniture, smalls,
some antiques, and everything in between for the
colonial, traditional, and primitive home.
(if you are ever in the area please stop in)
My other friend Amy with her husband Dr. Dan "The Gentleman Farmer"
own StoneCroft Farm in Macungie, PA.
With their two daughters they work the farm, raise goats, and
sell delicious and wonderfully
Natural Goat Cheese ~ Flowers ~ and Herbs
We became friends over the years....due in part from us being
like minded about alot of things...
"Peas in a Pod" as Amy likes to call us.
This particular visit was a girls week-end here at the Cabin
they presented me with the box on their arrival.
Well hard to describe how excited I was but I guess it showed,
they laughed saying they knew if any one
would appreciate a chewed up old box with holes in it,
it would be me. And I surely did !!!
After a fun filled day of catching up, eating, drinking, and laughing,
we called it a night. After they went up to bed I stayed awake and
played for awhile. I filled the box with an
old bowl, bean pot, crock, and candle holder, ditzed with it till I
was happy with the look, and couldn't keep my eyes open any longer.
When the girls came down in the morning for breakfast they saw it
all made up. Of course they laughed and said they should have know
I would fill it up right away and rearrange the kitchen to make it fit.
They knew this because that's what both of them would have done.
This box is another favorite thing of mine that has a story and is
tied up with love. How lucky I am, that I have wonderful friends who
would spend time, thinking about me...and bring me
such a special gift from the heart. I am truly
blessed to look around the cabin and find traces of this in every room.

Oh What Shall I Wear ?

Oh What Shall I Wear ?
This to me is an age old question, one made more
complicated by abundance, and good fortune.

In yesteryear I believe the question could be answered
quicker and without much ado. Our fore-sisters had
but ..... only a few garments to choose from,
each created by their own hand.
The one or two every day dresses they wore,
accompanied by the ever present work apron.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or the one or two "good" dresses saved for
Church and visiting friends and neighbors.
Today our lives are so much easier as we go about our
daily tasks but some how we have made it way more complex,
due in part to the blessings of choice ~~
Which leads me back to.....Oh What shall I Wear ?
The Letter ~
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words oh so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em
I'm gonna smile and sayI hope you're feeling better
I'll close with love the way you always do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you........
Lyrics by Billy Williams
Yesterday I received a letter from a friend who normally keeps in touch by...phone or email. It was a pleasant surprise, fun to find something in the mail addressed to me from far away. She wrote on sweet stationary, and in pretty script telling me whats being going on with her and her family. She also told me I am always in her thoughts and prayers, and how much she misses me, totally made my day.
I know my granddaughters love to receive letters and cards in the mail....they keep all that I send them in their treasure boxes. That's where this letter from my friend is going...in my treasure box. As much as I like to email and talk on the phone a letter seems more special. I'm going to make a point of writing real letters and cards more often.
Maybe there is someone who would love to hear from you.
"Mi Lady"
This is one of my prized Theorem’s, given to me years ago by my Dear Friend Mary.
We had a rare occasion to get away for the day , had gone shopping and out
to lunch. We were at the restaurant at Marlboro Barn in CT. when I saw
this Theorem hanging on the wall and remarked how much I liked it. Mary called the
very next day and ask where she could purchase it…the lady at the restaurant gave
her the name of the artist. Mary contacted her, placed an order
and gave it to me as a surprise for my birthday.
I love the piece but it means so much more because of the thoughtfulness of my Friend.
The tag on the back reads: “This is a reproduction of an early silhouette done on velvet
By the Theorem Method. Maura P. Campbell ~~ Hingham, MA ~~ Circa 1800’s
It has hung in various places in the cabin and has always sparked conversions
as
to what is going on with the lady ..... who I have yet to name.
I'm not sure if the bowl contains
apples, red onions, red tomatoes, or red potatoes maybe even beets…
but my take at times has been …..
"Mi Lady" cant bear to peel one more.
I have also thought a good title would be
“ A Woman’s Work is Never Done”
Do you think she is feeling Stress, Weariness, Sadness, maybe shes just bone tired.
Could it be just outside our view, is a child or husband who has just tracked
in mud all over her clean floor.
Has she just finished reading a letter from a relative who
has broken some bad news from back home.
or just maybe its been a hard year and she is bowing her head
Thanking the Good Lord for the bounty in her bowl.
I know on different days I see different things. ……
What do you see ???
Hoping your day has great Potential to see all Good Things.
